With a masterful use of a simple piece of paper Tony shows you how you can get a basic image of your characters, as well as the qualities, characteristics and vocabulary that you will use when describing in a short period of time.

Perhaps the most intriguing facet of this process is that not only can it help you develop interesting characters for your stories, but it can also be used as a highly effective method of teaching other people to develop characters for their stories. Even little kids - which are the students that Tony is most interested in teaching.

How to Create a Character for a Story

Points to Remember

• Divide a blank piece of paper into three section using two vertical lines
• Draw an image of your character in the middle section
• In the right hand section note the external qualities of your character (their hair, eyes, nose, mouth, clothes, hands, feet, etc.)
• On the left hand side note the internal qualities of your character (their attitudes, personality traits, quirks, desires, wants, pastimes, etc.)
• Establish rules to invite creativity (such as you can only use an adjective once, not all descriptions can be color, etc.)
• Tie the external and internal characteristics into the actual story
• At the end of this exercise you will have the vocabulary that you will use when describing and relating to your character in your story
